December already! The holidays are just a few weeks away. Since we are spending more time at home, why not give a gift to your lawn. The following ideas will improve the health and appearance of your lawn, which in turn enhances the beauty of your home and increases the enjoyment of spending time outside in your yard. Lime Application
Most of the soils in our area are highly acidic. Very acidic soil is a problem for your lawn because it prevents the grass from absorbing nutrients from the soil. Lime is a soil amendment made from limestone. Adding lime to acidic soil corrects and maintains the soil’s pH levels. A balanced pH will allow the grass roots to efficiently use nutrients from other soil amendments like fertilizers. Most lawns will benefit from a lime application. A soil test will tell you if you need lime and how much to apply so your lawn can reach its full potential.
Winterizer Fertilizer
There is still time to apply a Winterizer Fertilizer to your lawn. A winterizer is designed to help your lawn survive the winter and encourage the roots to grow deep and strong. The stored nutrients will also give you a head start in early spring by promoting growth and giving you a fast green up of your grass.
Leaf Removal
If you have not addressed the leaves on your lawn yet, now is a good time to take care of them. A thick covering of leaves should not be left on your grass over winter. Beside the fact that the fallen leaves are unattractive, they can cause many problems for the health and growth of your lawn.
Grass Roots in the Community
We are proud that we have been involved with a special local charitable organization, The Fairy Godmother Project since 2011. The FGP helps families in the Fredericksburg area that have a child battling pediatric cancer. The first part of their mission is to give the gift of time. They do this by easing the burden of domestic tasks by providing cooking, cleaning, lawn care, running errands, etc. Thus, freeing up time for the families to be together. They also offer emotional and financial support by supplying gas and grocery cards and helping pay bills.
The second part of their mission is to provide the families with photo sessions donated by professional photographers. Over the years we have provided lawn care, free of charge, to many of the families in the Fairy Godmother Project. It has been an honor to help these strong families during such a difficult time. At this time of year, you may be looking for a deserving organization to contribute to or to volunteer your time. This is a wonderful group worthy of your consideration.
